Application Process
The first step in becoming an Auxiliary Officer with the Portsmouth Police Department is to take the regional Great Bay Community College police test. Participation in this test will place the applicant on the eligibility list of approximately 45 southern New Hampshire, northern Massachusetts and southern Maine law enforcement agencies. All non-certified applicants for full time and part time positions who are interested in being employed by the Portsmouth Police Department MUST TAKE THIS EXAM. Those who pass this test will be invited to progress to the next phase, the Physical Agility test. The Physical Agility test is comprised of a Run, Bench Press, Push Ups, Sit Ups, and a Swim test. It is at this time we will be asking for the applicant's resume and cover letter.
Applicants who pass the Physical Agility Test will be invited to participate in an oral board and assessment center. From there the applicants are ranked and placed on an eligibility list. If the department is currently hiring, top ranking candidates will be given a conditional offer of employment followed by a polygraph, a background investigation, a medical examination, and a psychological examination. The final step of the hiring process is an interview with the Chief of Police and the Deputy Chief of Police.
All non-certified auxiliary police officer applicants who are selected for part-time employment by the Portsmouth Police Department will be required to attend the next available Part-Time Police Academy Recruitment Class.
