Minimum Qualifications
Education / Experience:
- Must be a US citizen
- Applicant must be 21 years of age prior to receiving a conditional offer of employment
- High School diploma or GED equivalent is required
- Military experience or post secondary schooling is strongly recommended
- Must have no criminal record
- Must possess a valid driver's license
Application Process
The Portsmouth Police Department DOES NOT issue applications for employment. It is NOT A REQUIREMENT of the Portsmouth Police Department for a full-time certified police officer to take the Great Bay Community College Police Entrance Exam.
ALL FULL-TIME CERTIFIED POLICE OFFICERS (from any state):
FULL-TIME POLICE OFFICER
The Portsmouth, New Hampshire Police Department is currently seeking POLICE OFFICERS who are currently full-time certified to fill vacancies in the Patrol Division. All candidates must pass a physical agility test (to include a swim test), oral board, psychological exam, polygraph exam and medical/physical, as well as an extensive background investigation. Applicants for this position must be 21 years of age at the time of employment, have a high school diploma or certificate of equivalency, and no criminal record. The salary range is $40,762 - $54,866.

ALL NON-CERTIFIED POLICE OFFICER APPLICANTS:
**All non-certified full-time police officer applicants who are interested in being employed by the Portsmouth Police Department MUST TAKE THIS EXAM.
The Portsmouth Police Department participates in a regional testing process through Great Bay Community College. Participation in this test will place the applicant on the eligibility list of approximately 45 southern New Hampshire, northern Massachusetts and southern Maine law enforcement agencies.

Additional Phases of the Selection Process
Those applicants who are chosen from the written exam eligibility list by the Portsmouth Police Department will be invited, along with the full-time certified applicants, to participate in the Portsmouth Police Department's physical agility test. Those applicants who successfully complete this phase of the hiring process will be further invited to attend the Portsmouth Police Department's Assessment Center Evaluation process.
From this point, all applicants are evaluated, scored and placed on a final eligibility list. A background investigation of listed applicants will commence shortly afterwards depending on the number of officers the Portsmouth Police Department is hiring at the time. An applicant who is chosen to have a background investigation completed, will be extended a conditional offer of employment
An applicant who successfully completes the background portion of the hiring process will then move on to a polygraph examination, followed by a psychological evaluation and medical exam. It is required that the applicant successfully complete each portion listed above. The final step of the hiring process will be a required interview conducted by the Chief and Deputy Chief of Police of the Portsmouth Police Department.
All non-certified police officer applicants who are selected for full-time employment by the Portsmouth Police Department will be required to attend the next available Police Academy Recruitment Class to be held in Concord NH at the New Hampshire Police Standards & Training Council.
Salary / Benefits
The starting salary of an entry level police officer with the Portsmouth Police Department is $40,762.52 and ranges to $54,866.07 for Master Patrolman II.

The Portsmouth Police Department offers full-time sworn officers the ability to apply for a variety of special assignments including the Accident Investigation Team, Bike Patrol, Crime Stoppers, Crisis Negotiation Team, Detectives, Seacoast Emergency Response Team, Honor Guard, Police K-9, Motorcycle Patrol, Narcotics Unit, Field Training Officer, Firearms Instructor, Firearms Armorer, Defensive Tactics/ASP/OC Instructor, Drug Recognition Expert (DRE), Breath-test Operator, Child Passenger Safety-Seat Inspector, and Family Services.
Summary of Duties and Responsibilities
- Performs patrolling duties in a vehicle, motorcycle, bicycle or on foot in an assigned area
- Answers calls for service
- Investigates traffic accidents and criminal offenses
- Makes arrests, issues citations and warnings
- Interacts with the community
- Identification of community problem areas with expected problem solutions
- Processes and transports prisoners
- Gathers information and writes investigative and other reports
