What is a Hold: Placing a hold will reserve items for you that are checked out to another person.
How to place a Hold
- To place a hold you must have a valid Portsmouth Public Library card.
- “Login to Your Library Account’ using your library card barcode number and PIN number.
- Conduct a search in the Library Catalog
To request that the item be saved for you (placed on hold), click on the REQUEST button. The system will immediately notify you if your request was accepted – “your request for ________was successful” .
- The library will notify you when a requested item is ready for you by email or by phone. The item is placed on the self-serve pickup shelves under your last name. Items are wrapped for privacy.
- Items are held for 3 business days before the hold is automatically cancelled and the item is moved to the next person or returned to the shelves.
Cancelling a Hold: Log in to your library account. Go to “Requests (Holds)”. Select the title(s) you wish to cancel by placing a check mark in the box next to it. Click on ‘Cancel Selected’ or ‘Cancel All.’
NOTE: Holds may only be placed on checked out items. Items that may be held have a due date in the Status column.
Restrictions: Holds may not be placed on feature films and television series, Reference Books and many items in Special Collections.
